Description:

A LARGE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL PEAR-SHAPED VASE, HU 17TH CENTURY The vase is of large pear-shaped hu form, rising from a spreading foot to a rounded, swelling body, narrowing at the neck before flaring gently at the mouth. The vessel is worked in cloisonné enamel on a copper body, the interior and exposed metal surfaces showing a warm coppery tone, while the exterior is richly covered with turquoise-ground decoration. The surface is densely ornamented with scrolling lotus and floral sprays, the coloured enamels including red, white, yellow, blue and green set against the vivid turquoise field. Fine wire cloisons articulate the curling tendrils and petal forms, creating an intricate all-over pattern that follows the curvature of the vessel from the foot through the body and neck. Narrow bands define the principal registers, lending structure to the otherwise luxuriant floral scheme. To either side of the shoulder are applied beast-mask handles, each cast with a fierce, stylised face and suspending a loose ring. These mask-and-ring mounts recall archaic bronze prototypes, a feature especially associated with Chinese vessels of hu form. Their darker patinated metal contrasts with the bright enamel ground, adding sculptural emphasis to the broadest part of the body. The hu shape carries a long Chinese antiquarian lineage, and in cloisonné enamel it became a particularly effective vehicle for combining archaistic form with brilliant surface decoration. The lotus scrolls evoke auspicious abundance and continuity, while the turquoise ground and polychrome enamels give the vessel a striking decorative presence characteristic of high-status Chinese enamel work. A substantial and visually commanding example, the vase unites robust form, elaborate floral ornament and archaistic mask handles, presenting a strong balance between ceremonial vessel tradition and richly coloured decorative artistry. Height: 35cm Weight: 3kg
