Description:

A CHINESE CELADON GLAZED TEAPOT, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The teapot is modelled with a rounded globular body raised on a short spreading foot, covered overall in a soft celadon-green glaze. It is fitted with a domed cover and a high arched overhead handle, the latter formed with a ridged, scaled texture and attached to the shoulder by curled terminals. The spout is modelled as a dragon’s head, its open mouth forming the pouring aperture, while a complementary dragon-form element appears at the opposing side. The body is decorated in low relief beneath the glaze with a sinuous dragon encircling the surface, its scales, claws and curling body subtly visible through the translucent celadon glaze. The decoration is restrained and tonal, relying on the play of raised design, pooled glaze and soft shadow rather than contrasting colour. The underside bears an impressed seal mark within the foot, also glazed in celadon. The dragon-form spout and arched handle give the vessel a sculptural quality, transforming a functional teapot into an object of auspicious display. In Chinese decorative tradition, the dragon is associated with imperial authority, potency and beneficent power, while the celadon glaze evokes earlier ceramic traditions prized for their quiet refinement and jade-like surface. The teapot belongs to the Qing Dynasty, a period in which archaistic forms, monochrome glazes and auspicious animal motifs were widely reinterpreted for refined domestic and ceremonial use. Its combination of dragon modelling, relief decoration and pale green glaze places emphasis on elegant form and tactile surface. A finely conceived Qing celadon-glazed teapot, notable for its dragon-head spout, high arched handle and subtle relief decoration beneath a smooth green glaze. Height: 17.5cm
