Description:

A CHINESE CERAMIC SNUFF BOTTLE DEPICTING A LUOHAN, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Of flattened circular form with a short cylindrical neck, this Qing dynasty ceramic snuff bottle is decorated in a restrained monochrome palette, the dark ground providing a strong contrast to the pale relief and painted details. It is accompanied by an orange-toned stopper and spoon, the warm colour of the stopper offering a striking accent against the black-and-white body. Compact in scale, the bottle belongs to the refined tradition of Qing snuff containers, in which small format objects became vehicles for elaborate decoration, symbolic imagery and personal display. The principal decoration depicts a luohan, or Buddhist enlightened disciple, shown in pale relief within a recessed central reserve. The figure appears animated and expressive, with one arm raised and the body turned in lively movement, suggesting the eccentric spiritual energy often associated with luohan imagery. Around the shoulder and border, scattered cloud-like forms punctuate the dark surface, framing the central figure and giving the composition a celestial or otherworldly character. Luohan figures were widely admired in Chinese art for their supernatural powers, ascetic wisdom and unconventional appearances. Unlike more formal Buddhist icons, luohan were frequently represented with vivid individuality, expressive gestures and sometimes playful or dramatic attributes. On a snuff bottle, such imagery would have carried both religious and auspicious associations, suggesting protection, spiritual attainment and cultured appreciation of Buddhist themes within the intimate sphere of personal luxury. The use of ceramic as the medium is significant. While hardstone and glass snuff bottles often emphasised material rarity, ceramic examples allowed for strong contrasts of glaze, relief, painterly detail and miniature narrative design. Here, the dark ground heightens the pale figure and cloud motifs, creating a bold, almost cameo-like visual effect. The small circular body also encourages close handling and inspection, qualities central to the appeal of snuff bottles as scholarly and social objects during the Qing dynasty. This bottle is a distinctive example of Qing ceramic snuff bottle production, combining compact form, Buddhist subject matter and a carefully balanced decorative scheme. Its depiction of a luohan gives the piece iconographic depth, while the contrast between the dark ceramic body, pale relief decoration and orange stopper lends it an immediate visual presence. Height: 5.2cm
