Description:

A CHINESE STIMULATED GILT BRONZE DECORATED TRIPOD CERAMIC CENSER WITH QIANLONG MARK & CELADON DISH The lot comprises a Chinese ceramic tripod censer with cover, together with a celadon dish. The censer is of compressed circular form, raised on three short feet and set with upright loop handles, its domed cover surmounted by a pierced and modelled finial. The accompanying dish is of shallow rounded form, covered in a pale celadon glaze. The censer is finished in a rich reddish-brown glaze, enlivened with gilt decoration and turquoise splashes. Around the lower body, raised scrollwork and wave-like ornament create a decorative band, while the cover is similarly embellished with gilt highlights and turquoise accents. The underside bears a Qianlong mark within a recessed central area. The form of the censer draws on the long Chinese tradition of vessels for incense burning, in which ceramic bodies often echo the profiles and decorative language of archaic bronzes. Here, the tripod support, loop handles and pierced cover suggest a functional object intended for ritual, scholarly or domestic fragrance use, while the gilt-bronze-style embellishment gives the piece a richly ornamental character. The celadon dish provides a restrained counterpoint to the censer, its softly flared sides and even pale green glaze reflecting the enduring appeal of monochrome ceramics in Chinese taste. The pairing brings together two differing surface aesthetics: the elaborate, gilt-heightened decoration of the censer and the quiet simplicity of celadon glaze. Catalogued as Ming Dynasty and later, the group is notable for its combination of decorative richness, Qing-style mark, and contrasting ceramic surfaces. It presents as a compact and visually engaging lot within the collecting field of Chinese ceramics. Diameter of Largest: 12.5cm
