Description:

A YELLOW MONOCHROME DISH & A GREEN MONOCHROME INCENSE BURNER, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) A Chinese yellow-glazed oval dish and a green-glazed incense burner, Qing dynasty. The dish is of elongated oval form, finely moulded to the well with scrolling floral decoration around a central reserve, the design lying beneath a rich egg-yolk yellow glaze with fine craquelure. The rounded rim and shallow foot give the piece a refined, scholar’s-table character, while the monochrome yellow glaze recalls the taste for bold, auspicious colour in later imperial and domestic wares. The incense burner is of compressed circular form, raised on three short feet, with a rounded body and everted rim. It is covered in a deep emerald-green glaze with visible crackle and darker pooling around the interior and lower body. Green-glazed vessels of this type were often associated with scholar’s objects, incense use, and decorative display, their jewel-like surface intended to catch the light and contrast with darker wood stands or table settings. Together, the two pieces present a striking contrast of Qing monochrome glaze traditions: the warm, luminous yellow of the dish and the saturated green of the incense burner. Both works show age-related surface wear, craquelure and firing variation consistent with use and handling. Length of longest: 13.5 cm
