Description:

THREE CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLES, UNDERGLAED BLUE & FAMILLE ROSE, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Comprising three Chinese porcelain snuff bottles of varied form and decoration, including examples in underglaze blue and famille rose enamels. The group presents a pleasing contrast of shape, surface treatment and pictorial subject, from a rounded blue and white bottle to a cylindrical enamelled example and a flattened famille rose bottle with landscape panels. The blue and white bottle is of small baluster form, painted in underglaze cobalt with figures on horseback and architectural detail, the base bearing a four-character mark. Its rounded shoulders and short neck are finished with a small stopper, the decoration making effective use of reserve white against deep blue washes. The central bottle is of slender cylindrical form with a pale, lightly speckled ground, enamelled with figures in coloured robes, including a bearded scholar-like figure and a youth. Its restrained palette and upright profile contrast with the more densely decorated examples, lending the group a varied and collected character. The flattened famille rose bottle is decorated with landscape panels framed by brightly enamelled floral and scroll ornament. The painted scenes depict mountainous river landscapes with small figures and boats, set within a vivid border of iron red, green, purple and yellow enamels. The base bears a blue seal mark, adding further visual interest to the underside. Snuff bottles became highly prized personal accessories in Qing China, valued not only for function but also as miniature vehicles for painterly decoration, auspicious imagery and technical refinement. This group demonstrates the range of Qing porcelain snuff-bottle production, combining blue and white narrative imagery with famille rose landscapes and figural enamelling. A decorative group of three Qing dynasty porcelain snuff bottles, notable for their varied forms, contrasting palettes and finely scaled painted ornament. Height of Tallest: 8.6cm
