Description:

TWO CHINESE BLUE & WHITE SMALL POTS, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) Comprising two small Chinese blue and white porcelain pots, each of compact scale and rounded form, finely potted with a clear white ground and painted in cobalt blue. The group includes a squat jar with rounded sides and open mouth, and a taller ovoid pot with a short neck and flat circular cover. The squat pot is decorated with a lively dragon among cloud scrolls, the creature’s sinuous body extending around the curved surface above a band of stylised waves. The design is characteristically animated, the cobalt varying in tone from pale washes to deeper blue accents, giving definition to the dragon’s scales, claws and surrounding clouds. The taller pot is painted with figural scenes, including scholars or attendants in a domestic setting, one figure seated at a table with a scroll. The cover is decorated with a blue roundel, adding a pleasing finish to the vessel’s small upright profile. The figural subject reflects the Kangxi-period taste for narrative and literary themes, often rendered with economy and clarity in underglaze blue. Blue and white porcelain of the Kangxi period is celebrated for its bright cobalt, crisp drawing and wide decorative range, from auspicious dragons to elegant figural compositions. Though modest in scale, these two pots show the variety and charm of small-format Kangxi wares, combining mythological imagery with cultivated human subject matter. A decorative and appealing pair of small Kangxi-period blue and white vessels, displaying well-balanced forms and lively underglaze-blue ornament. Height of Tallest: 6cm
