Description:

A COCO-DE-MER BEGGAR'S BOWL (KASHKUL) PERSIA, LATE 18TH/19TH CENTURY

This exceptional Kashkul bowl, crafted from a coco-de-mer shell, embodies the spiritual and artistic heritage of Persia. The exterior is intricately carved with dense floral and vegetal motifs, interwoven with stylized inscriptions, likely of spiritual or poetic significance. The dark, rich patina of the shell provides a striking contrast to the lighter, detailed carvings, enhancing the visual depth and complexity of the design. The bowl’s elongated, oval form is characteristic of beggar's bowls traditionally used by dervishes, symbolizing humility and devotion. Brass fittings affixed to the ends suggest functionality for suspension or carrying. The interior remains naturally textured, revealing the organic beauty of the coco-de-mer. Kashkuls of this kind were not only practical objects but also served as expressions of piety and artistic expression, often commissioned by or gifted to esteemed religious figures. This particular piece, with its elaborate decoration and historical resonance, represents a significant artifact of Persian cultural history.
