Description:

Lot 266. AN OTTOMAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID AND INSCRIBED CASKET
Early 20th Century

A superb rectangular casket of architectural form, its surface lavishly inlaid with fine geometric marquetry of mother-of-pearl, bone, and exotic hardwoods. The hinged lid, sloping at the sides, is centred by an elongated cartouche containing elegant Arabic calligraphy, framed by intricate interlaced patterns and chequered borders. A continuous band of inscription inlaid in bone runs along the slanted upper edge, invoking blessings and expressing piety in beautifully composed thuluth script.

The front is designed with five small drawers, their façades richly inlaid in alternating diamond, lozenge, and hexagonal motifs, bordered by fine chevrons and rosettes. The sides and base continue the same geometric harmony, each detail executed with precision and luminous contrast. The lid opens to reveal a polished wooden interior with compartmentalised storage, reflecting both refinement and functionality.

This casket exemplifies the enduring Ottoman tradition of sedefkâr (mother-of-pearl inlay work), a craft that flourished particularly in late Ottoman Istanbul and Damascus. The combination of calligraphy, geometry, and shimmering shell inlay situates this piece among the most luxurious examples of early 20th-century Ottoman decorative arts.
