A COLLECTION OF POETRY BY THE RECITER ABU AL-FATH AL-BUSTI, NORTH AFRICA,

Description:
Arabic manuscript on paper; a diwan (poetry collection) attributed to Abu al-Fath al-Busti, comprising verses arranged in vertical double columns throughout. The manuscript is written in a bold and readable Maghribi script in black ink with red rubrication used sparingly for emphasis. The text is dense, with occasional marginalia and glosses. The opening folio bears a distinctive calligraphic title in triangular layout. Water staining is visible, particularly at the lower margins, yet the manuscript remains generally legible. The volume is bound in a later burgundy leather binding with blind-stamped medallion and corner tools.

Comparable examples:

  • A diwan by Abu al-Fath al-Busti, 18th century, sold at Christie’s, London, 27 April 2017, Lot 40, for £3,500.

  • A Maghribi-script poetry manuscript, North Africa, dated 1790, sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 28 October 2019, Lot 73, for £4,375.

  • A North African Sufi manuscript containing similar poetic content sold at Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 25 October 2022, Lot 65, for £3,250.

Note:
Abu al-Fath al-Busti (d. 1010) was a Persian-born poet and prose writer renowned for his didactic and ethical poetry. Though this copy is likely a North African later transcription, it reflects the enduring popularity of his verses across the Islamic world. The distinct Maghribi script, use of vibrant red rubrication, and the double-column layout are all stylistic hallmarks of manuscript production in the region.
