Description:

Lot 62. A Diyarbakir Çintamani Pottery Tile, Ottoman Turkey, Late 16th/Early 17th Century

This vibrant Diyarbakir pottery tile represents a regional interpretation of the celebrated Ottoman çintamani motif. Painted in cobalt blue, turquoise, and bole red under a transparent glaze, the tile displays the iconic design of paired wavy bands alternating with groups of three circular roundels, set against a deep blue ground. The fluid arrangement of the elements and the slightly irregular hand of the painter imbue the piece with a lively, almost rhythmic character typical of Anatolian craftsmanship.

Unlike the more refined productions of Iznik, Diyarbakir ceramics are noted for their earthier charm and bolder color contrasts, with the cobalt blue glaze often dominating the composition. This stylistic divergence reflects the spread of Ottoman decorative vocabulary across the empire, where local workshops adapted courtly aesthetics to regional materials and tastes.

Originating from Diyarbakir in southeastern Anatolia, this tile testifies to the enduring appeal of the çintamani as a symbol of strength, continuity, and protection within Ottoman visual culture. Formerly part of a London private collection and previously held by the late Henry Brownrigg, it stands as a remarkable example of how imperial motifs flourished far beyond the royal ateliers.
