Description:

A FINE OTTOMAN PARCEL-GILT ENAMELLED SILVER FILIGREE CENSER, 18TH CENTURY
Ottoman Empire, 18th century

Description:
A superbly crafted Ottoman incense burner (censer), composed of silver filigree, parcel-gilt, and lavishly decorated with vibrant enamel floral and architectural motifs. The lid, fashioned in the form of a domed mosque with multiple minarets and crowned finials, opens to reveal a delicate openwork cup supported on a foliate baluster stem. The base features a circular platform adorned with finely detailed blossoms in raised enamel and filigree.

The dense and intricate craftsmanship reflects the high Ottoman baroque taste, with stylised tulips, carnations, and turquoise cabochons creating a richly ornamental surface. Dragons, dolphins, and foliate scrolls adorn the handles in repoussé and twisted filigree work, contributing to its regal appearance.

Dimensions: Height: 24 cm; Diameter: 21 cm

Comparable examples:

  • A comparable Ottoman parcel-gilt silver-gilt censer with enamel decoration, sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 25 October 2017, Lot 138, for £32,500.

  • A similar 18th-century Ottoman silver filigree incense burner in the Sadberk Hanım Museum, Istanbul (inv. no. SHM 7566), closely parallels the floral filigree technique seen here.

  • An Ottoman parcel-gilt silver and polychrome enamel incense burner, sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 23 April 2020, Lot 145, for £27,500.

Note:
Censers of this quality were used in imperial households and mosques, and sometimes given as diplomatic gifts. The architectural lid may symbolise a specific mosque or idealised domed sanctuary, reinforcing its association with sacred fragrance and courtly ritual. The refined combination of silverwork and enamelling places this among the most elaborate Ottoman incense vessels of the period..
