Description:

THREE OTTOMAN SILVER JUGS WITH ASSOCIATED TUGHRA, 19TH CENTURY, TURKEY
Ottoman Empire, 19th century

Description:
A fine group of three solid silver lidded jugs (ibrik), each of slightly different form but unified by elegant proportions and traditional Ottoman silversmithing details. All three pieces are surmounted by hinged domed lids with tulip and bud finials, and feature curved spouts and finely cast loop handles, one of which is adorned with a scrolling foliate motif. The bodies are decorated with incised bands around the necks and shoulder, and each bears an associated tughra (imperial cipher), now softened from wear, on or near the base.

These vessels were likely intended for serving rosewater or other perfumed liquids during formal gatherings, reflecting Ottoman refinement in court and domestic rituals.

Measurements:

  • Height of tallest jug: 21.5 cm

  • Combined weight: 1.134 kg

Comparative examples:

  • Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 27 April 2016, Lot 193, “Three Ottoman silver rosewater jugs,” £9,375

  • Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 23 October 2018, Lot 197, “Group of Ottoman silver vessels,” £8,750

  • Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 24 October 2019, Lot 225, “Ottoman silver ewers with tughra,” £10,625

Note:
Such jugs often formed part of larger Ottoman domestic or ceremonial silver services. Their use of restrained repoussé and chased work is characteristic of 19th-century Ottoman court metalwork. The associated tughras, while not necessarily official state markings, indicate a connection to the imperial style or possible commemorative production.
