Description:

Lot 201. A GOLD-DAMASCENED WATERED STEEL PUSH DAGGER (KATAR), MUGHAL INDIA, 19TH CENTURY

This refined Mughal katar represents the pinnacle of 19th-century Indian arms craftsmanship, combining both technical mastery and rich ornamentation.

The double-edged watered steel (wootz) blade displays a subtle damascus pattern, forged to create a fine, moiré-like surface. The hilt—comprising two lateral bars and two crossbars—is fully inlaid in gold damascene with scrolling floral and tendril motifs, a design typical of high Mughal metalwork traditions from northern India.

At the forte of the blade, an elegantly shaped koftgari gold cartouche forms a cusped arch, ornamented with intricate foliage and topped with a small floral finial. The central ring below the grip serves both as a decorative and functional element, balancing the symmetry of the hilt.

The scabbard, covered in deep red velvet, complements the luxurious aesthetic and survives remarkably well, showing traces of original texture and pile.
