Description:

Lot 147. A GREEK BRONZE GRIFFIN PROTOME
Archaic Period, circa 620 B.C.

Finely cast in the form of a griffin’s head, the protome exhibits the characteristic hooked beak, flared nostrils, and almond-shaped eyes with raised rims. The open mouth conveys a dynamic expression, and a pair of upright ears projects from the crown of the head. The surface shows an attractive mottled green patina with traces of reddish-brown cuprite beneath, attesting to its age and burial conditions.

Originally designed as an attachment to a large bronze cauldron, such griffin protomes were emblematic of Greek craftsmanship in the Archaic period, reflecting Near Eastern influence absorbed through trade and conquest. These ornaments, often set in opposing pairs along vessel rims, symbolized protection and power—attributes linked to the griffin as a guardian creature in Greek and Oriental mythology.

This example preserves fine modelling in the contours of the head and detailing around the eye and beak, testifying to the precision and vitality that define early Greek bronze work. Comparable examples have been excavated at Olympia, Delphi, and in Etruscan sanctuaries, attesting to the widespread admiration of such works throughout the Mediterranean world.
