Description:

Lot 242. A GROUP OF THREE ÇANAKKALE VESSELS, TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY

This vividly coloured ceramic group, typical of the pottery tradition from Çanakkale in northwestern Turkey, dates to the 19th century. The largest piece, a fantastical ewer with twin shell-shaped dishes extending from either side, exemplifies the exuberant modelling and bold palette characteristic of Çanakkale ware.

The pottery features a dense application of mottled glazes in yellow, green, brown, and white, creating a lively surface texture. Decorative motifs such as coiled serpentine forms, shells, and applied reliefs contribute to its baroque energy. The bright lead glazes, splashed and pooled, lend the piece a spontaneous painterly quality.

Çanakkale pottery was highly sought after across the Ottoman Empire and beyond for its inventive shapes and brilliant colours, merging folk art exuberance with coastal Anatolian craftsmanship.
