Description:

Lot 243. A MAMLUK-STYLE ENAMELLED GLASS MOSQUE LAMP, FRANCE OR AUSTRIA, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY

This exquisite glass mosque lamp is a fine example of the Orientalist revival styles that flourished in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. Inspired by the grand enamelled glass lamps produced under the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria in the 14th century, this piece demonstrates the remarkable technical and aesthetic skill of European glassmakers emulating Islamic art.

The lamp’s body is of traditional mosque-lamp form, with a broad flaring mouth, globular midsection, and tapering foot. The richly enameled decoration features panels of stylised thuluth inscriptions and scrolling arabesques
rendered in vibrant cobalt blue, turquoise, red, and gold tones against the transparent glass body. Suspended by three metal chains and a conical mount, the piece would have been intended for both illumination and aesthetic display, echoing the opulence of its medieval Islamic prototypes.
