Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Silk and metallic thread; a double-sided textile hanging featuring a vivid paisley motif on one side in rich reds, saffron, indigo, and black, with repetitive boteh patterns across the field. The reverse is a more subdued blue silk plain weave, offering contrast for display or use. Edged throughout with gold metallic fringe.

This textile exemplifies the Kashmiri mastery in color, pattern, and fine weaving. The boteh motif, characteristic of the region, is rendered with exceptional clarity and density, demonstrating both technical finesse and artistic richness. The use of metallic fringe further suggests this was a decorative piece, likely intended for ceremonial or domestic display.

Comparable examples:
A Kashmiri textile with similar boteh patterns and metallic threadwork was sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 25 October 2018, Lot 45, for £3,250.

Another comparable 19th-century Kashmiri hanging, also with metallic fringe, appeared at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 10 June 2019, Lot 112, and realized £2,750.

Note:
Kashmir’s textile traditions in the 19th century flourished under both Mughal and later Dogra patronage. Pieces such as this were not only decorative but carried symbolic and social value, frequently used in homes of the elite or during special occasions. The dual-faced design reveals a thoughtful approach to display versatility.
