Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Wool; a double-sided handwoven textile hanging featuring horizontal bands of intricate geometric and linear patterns in vivid shades of red, saffron, green, black, and ivory. The front side displays a more defined and crisply delineated pattern, while the reverse shows a looser, textured finish, characteristic of hand-loomed production.

This richly patterned Kashmiri hanging demonstrates the complex artistry of traditional loom weaving in the region. The rhythmic repetition of motifs and color bands lends it a vibrant, almost musical visual cadence. The durable wool composition and dual-sided finish suggest its use in both domestic and ceremonial contexts.

Comparable examples:
A similarly patterned wool textile from 19th-century Kashmir sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 24 October 2019, Lot 78, for £2,250.

Another related hanging, with comparable bold horizontal striation and colorwork, was offered at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 15 October 2018, Lot 57, and achieved £1,875.

Note:
Kashmiri textile artistry is renowned for its blend of technical intricacy and bold design. Such woven panels were often used as wall hangings, prayer rugs, or ceremonial cloths, valued not only for their utility but for their vibrant aesthetic rooted in regional cultural identity
