Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Wool and silk textile with metallic thread; one side featuring a richly woven boteh (paisley) pattern in crimson and ochre tones, framed with a decorative gold thread border and fringe. The reverse in solid crimson silk, minimally adorned, providing a striking contrast. The textile is likely a ceremonial or decorative hanging, possibly used in a courtly or religious context.

This elegant Kashmiri textile is a fine example of the region’s renowned weaving tradition, reflecting the luxurious materials and intricate designs favored in the 19th century. The dense boteh motif—associated with fertility and eternity—emphasizes the Persianate influence in Kashmiri artistry. The presence of gold-thread embroidery in one corner suggests personalization or possible dedication.

Comparable examples:
A similar 19th-century Kashmir shawl fragment with boteh motifs and gold embroidery sold at Christie’s, London, 10 October 2017, Lot 92, for £3,500.

Another related hanging, featuring similar materials and motifs, achieved £4,250 at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 15 April 2019, Lot 119.

A complete Kashmiri embroidered textile with gold fringe and silk reverse was offered at Sotheby’s, London, 20 October 2020, Lot 45, with an estimate of £4,000–6,000.

Note:
Textiles such as this were often produced in the region of Srinagar, where master weavers created pieces for domestic use and export. The combination of metallic thread, woven paisley, and silk backing points to a luxury item possibly commissioned by or gifted to a person of high status. Its condition, while showing expected wear, retains much of its original vibrancy and charm.
