Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
A vibrant rectangular hanging densely embroidered in fine sozni (needlework) with a repeating field of boteh (paisley) motifs in alternating directions, worked in reds, greens, blues, and ivory tones. The textile is bordered with a striking gold-thread spiral trim, applied in a continuous meandering loop pattern. The botehs are filled with miniature floral sprays and are set against a rich red ground, exemplifying the intricacy and refinement of Kashmiri design traditions. This textile was likely used as a decorative wall hanging or ceremonial covering.

Condition:
Very good condition with minimal wear; gold thread edging remains intact and vibrant.

Comparable examples:

  • A Kashmir sozni-embroidered hanging, 19th century, sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 25 October 2022, Lot 117, for £4,080.

  • A similar paisley-patterned textile with gilt edging from Kashmir, late 19th century, featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection, Accession No. IM.216-1920.

  • Another example with spiral zari border sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 31 March 2022, Lot 142, for £5,250.

Note:
This example is especially notable for its preservation and the bold addition of the metallic-thread border, which enhances its visual richness and ceremonial appeal. Pieces like this illustrate the synthesis of Mughal-influenced aesthetics with indigenous Kashmiri needlework expertise.
