Description:

: A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Cotton and silk patchwork; a square textile composed of alternating panels of deep red and midnight blue fields, each printed with repeating stylized floral clusters. The composition is framed with narrow borders bearing vegetal motifs in ochre, green, and crimson. The reverse is lined in plain crimson silk and edged with a vibrantly embroidered multicolored trim.

This hanging is an elegant example of the Kashmiri aesthetic, which often fused bold color blocking with intricate textile printing. The vibrant palette and block-printed motifs reflect the influence of both local and Mughal design traditions, particularly in the balanced symmetry and stylized naturalism of the floral groupings.

Comparable examples:
A similar block-printed Kashmir textile sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 October 2020, Lot 132, for £3,250.
A 19th-century Kashmiri ceremonial cloth with related color scheme and floral layout was offered at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 22 April 2021, Lot 104, and realized £2,750.
A printed and quilted Kashmir textile panel sold at Sotheby’s, London, 14 October 2015, Lot 89, for £3,000.

Note:
Patchwork textiles such as this were often produced for domestic or dowry use, and the care in alignment and finishing suggests a piece of particular pride and value. The preservation of both front and reverse sides enhances its appeal as a collectible object of South Asian textile history.
