Description:

: A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
A finely embroidered panel of natural cotton or muslin ground worked in vibrant polychrome silk threads. The design features alternating red and blue diagonal bands filled with dense floral motifs in typical Kashmiri style, forming a wave-like rhythm across the surface. This piece exemplifies the meticulous chain-stitch embroidery (ari work) that Kashmir became known for during the 19th century. The reverse is lined in rust-colored plain cotton. Likely used as a hanging or furnishing textile.

This richly worked textile would have adorned domestic interiors, possibly as a coverlet or wall hanging. Its craftsmanship reflects both Persianate influence and local sensibilities, popular among both Indian nobility and European patrons during the colonial period.

Comparable examples:

  • A 19th-century Kashmir embroidered panel sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 24 October 2018, Lot 97, for £5,000.

  • A similar textile fragment with comparable wave and floral motifs fetched £4,750 at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 30 March 2021, Lot 56.

  • An embroidered Kashmiri hanging of similar scale and technique sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 April 2017, Lot 175, for £6,875.

Note:
Kashmir textiles of the 19th century were often sought after for their intricate decorative appeal and durability. The technique seen here was frequently commissioned for export markets and is a testament to the fine artistry of regional artisans.
