A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Silk and wool textile panel embroidered with bold horizontal bands of boteh and floral motifs, worked in fine chain-stitch embroidery (crewelwork) using wool thread. Alternating red, green, and black ground stripes provide a vibrant backdrop for repeating stylized motifs, bordered with gold metallic thread embroidery and finished with fringed edges. The reverse lined in crimson silk, now water-stained and worn.

This richly ornamented hanging reflects the height of Kashmiri textile artistry in the 19th century, combining rhythmic design with sumptuous color contrasts. The use of floral meanders and almond-shaped boteh elements in formal repetition exemplifies the region's distinctive visual language. Embroidery remains vibrant; wear, staining, and fading to the lining consistent with age.

Note:
Such hangings were often produced for ceremonial or domestic display, their bold striping and metallic embellishment making them popular exports during the 19th century. The textile’s scale and finish suggest it was intended as a decorative wall panel or furnishing for a well-appointed interior.
