Description:

AN OTTOMAN SILK & METAL THREAD FLATWOVEN PANEL, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY
Ottoman Empire, circa 1850–1900

Description:
A flatwoven textile panel composed of silk and metal-wrapped thread. The design centers around a wide golden band interwoven with stylized geometric medallions and rosettes, flanked by vivid cobalt-blue fields. The metallic threads catch the light, giving the piece a rich, almost ceremonial glow, while the fine weft detailing and banded striping showcase expert craftsmanship typical of Ottoman court textiles. Cream-colored fringes at both ends complete the composition.

This elegant weaving likely served as a sash (kemer), table cover, or wall hanging. The combination of silk and gilt thread is emblematic of high-status textiles produced in the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century, often used for both everyday opulence and formal presentation.

Comparable examples:
See the David Collection, Copenhagen, Inv. No. 49/1998 for a related flatwoven Ottoman textile incorporating similar gilded thread techniques.
Also compare Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 27 April 2022, Lot 180 for a silk and metal thread Ottoman panel of related palette and layout.

Note:
Such textiles were commonly produced in weaving centers like Bursa and Istanbul, known for their luxury textile production catering to the imperial court and aristocracy. The restrained palette, vibrant blue fields, and symmetrical composition reflect a refined aesthetic aligned with late Ottoman tastes.
