Description:

A PAIR OF CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE DISHES, GUANGXU MARK & OF THE PERIOD (1875-1908) The pair comprises two Chinese famille rose porcelain dishes, each finely enamelled to the interior with auspicious and scholarly motifs around a central roundel. At the centre, a green mythical sea creature or fish-like beast is shown among stylised waves, encircled by a blue wave-pattern medallion with radiating lappet-like details. Around the well are painted further auspicious elements, including bamboo, pine, bats, scattered precious objects and a seated figure, all rendered in soft famille rose enamels with blue, green, iron-red, pink and turquoise tones. The reverse of each dish is decorated with iron-red and green ribboned motifs spaced around the exterior, and each bears a blue enamel Guangxu mark to the base. The catalogue identifies the dishes as Guangxu mark and of the period. The decoration is lively and unusual, combining symbolic imagery with a light, informal late Qing palette. The dishes show minor surface wear and small firing specks consistent with age and handling. Their paired format, period marks and decorative subject matter make them an attractive example of Guangxu-period famille rose porcelain. Diameter: 13 cm
