Description:

Lot 110. A RECTANGULAR POTTERY TILE DEPICTING THE VIRGIN MARY AND CHILD
Qajar Iran, Early 20th Century

This rectangular pottery tile is vividly painted under a clear glaze with an image of the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the Christ Child. The figures are enclosed within an oval medallion framed by a cobalt-blue border filled with scrolling floral motifs. Mary is depicted wearing a green mantle with chevron and foliate designs in shades of green, yellow, and black, while the Child, clothed in a deep brown robe, rests upon her lap. Both bear delicate haloes picked out in yellow, their faces rendered with characteristic Qajar refinement — large almond-shaped eyes, fine arched brows, and softly blushed cheeks.

Floral sprays in red, turquoise, and white flank the figures within the medallion, balancing the composition’s devotional intimacy with decorative elegance. The glaze displays fine craquelure throughout, lending a subtle sense of age and warmth to the surface.

Tiles of this type were produced in Qajar Iran under strong European artistic influence, often inspired by Christian devotional imagery introduced through trade and diplomatic exchange. They were admired for their vivid coloration and the fusion of Persian ceramic tradition with Western iconography.
