Description:

A ROMAN BLOODSTONE PENDANT SET IN A GOLD FRAME, 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.

The intaglio depicts two figures from Egyptian mythology: Anubis, the jackal-headed god associated with mummification and the afterlife, holding a bow and arrow; and a falcon-headed deity, likely Horus, wearing a headdress with horns, potentially representing a syncretic deity like Harsaphes or a specific aspect of Horus. The figures are surrounded by stars, suggesting a celestial or astrological connection, possibly relating to the journey.  Such intaglios were used as seals to authenticate documents or property, or worn as amulets for protection and divine favor.

Reverse:

intricately carved with the figure of a deity or mythological being, possibly an "aguipede god" (a deity with serpent legs) or a figure associated with protection or healing. It is set within a gold frame with a ribbed or braided design and includes a loop for suspension.

Amulets like this were worn in ancient times as protective charms, believed to ward off evil, illness, or misfortune, and to bring good luck. The specific figure and the use of bloodstone jasper, a stone often associated with healing and vitality, suggest a connection to protective or health-related beliefs in Roman culture.
