Description:

A RUBY-RED OVERLAY SNOWFLAKE GLASS DEPICTING WISE MEN, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Of flattened rounded form, this Qing dynasty snuff bottle is finely worked in ruby-red overlay glass on a translucent snowflake ground, the body rising to a short cylindrical neck and accompanied by a red-toned stopper with spoon. The pale, softly speckled glass provides a misty, atmospheric field against which the deep ruby overlay has been carved in high relief, creating a strong contrast between the milky ground and the richly saturated decoration. The principal decoration depicts figures traditionally identifiable as wise men or scholars, set within a compact landscape composition of architectural elements, foliage, rockwork and enclosing branches. On one side, a seated figure appears beneath or beside a pavilion-like structure, surrounded by leafy stems and angular rock forms; on the reverse, further figures and scholarly accoutrements are arranged in a similarly dense narrative scene. The carving is energetic and deeply undercut in places, with incised detail used to define robes, faces, vessels, roof tiles and foliage. The subject belongs to the long Chinese tradition of celebrating the cultivated life of the scholar, sage or recluse. Such figures were associated with learning, moral refinement, poetic retreat and communion with nature. In miniature form, the imagery would have suited the intimate character of the snuff bottle, an object intended to be handled, examined and exchanged within elite social settings where literary and symbolic references were readily appreciated. Ruby-red overlay on snowflake glass was a technically sophisticated Qing decorative medium. The maker first formed a bottle with layers of contrasting glass and then carved away the coloured surface to leave the design standing proud. The snowflake ground, with its suspended flecks and cloudy translucency, was prized for its resemblance to natural inclusions or winter vapour, while the ruby overlay gave depth, brilliance and sculptural emphasis to the narrative scenes. The bottle is a strong example of Qing taste for small-scale luxury objects combining technical virtuosity, auspicious subject matter and tactile refinement. Its lively figural carving, rich colour contrast and carefully composed scenes give the piece both decorative force and scholarly resonance. Height: 7.3cm
