Description:

Lot 139. AN INDIAN COPPER EWER IN THE FORM OF A BULL
Deccan, 17th–18th Century

Cast in copper with a deep brown patina, the ewer is formed as a recumbent bull resting on an oval foot, the head raised and hollowed to serve as a spout. The rounded body is smoothly modelled with gently defined limbs and haunches, the ears and small horns subtly detailed. The neck is encircled by a narrow band, and the arched handle rises from two hinged attachments above the shoulders, balanced by a plain loop handle at the rear. The surface shows faint hammering and soft burnish from age and use, with light patches of reddish oxidation.

The underside is slightly concave, showing the plain base and traces of hand-finishing around the footrim.

Zoomorphic ewers of this type were produced in the Deccan courts, where animal forms were adapted to functional metalwork for ritual or domestic use. The bull, long associated with fertility and strength in both Hindu and Islamic traditions, appears frequently in Deccani bronzes and copper vessels of the seventeenth century, reflecting the syncretic artistic vocabulary of the region.
