Description:

AN IZNIK POTTERY DISH, OTTOMAN TURKEY, CIRCA 1600
Ottoman Turkey, circa 1600

Description:
A striking Iznik pottery dish painted in cobalt blue tones under a transparent glaze, featuring a densely interlaced central rosette pattern composed of stylized cloud scrolls and floral motifs. The cavetto is encircled with a radiating wave-and-reed motif transitioning into a wide border of alternating floral panels. The entire composition is painted on a pale turquoise ground. The reverse is glazed and sparsely marked, with typical kiln support marks and areas of restoration around the footring.

This dish belongs to the distinctive “Damascus palette” phase of Iznik ceramics, notable for its tight arabesque structures and saturated blue tones, evoking both Ottoman elegance and early Chinese influence.

Diameter: 25.5cm

Note:
This design reflects the transitional period of Iznik production as it moved from the courtly classical style toward more commercially driven aesthetics. Dishes of this type were highly prized in Ottoman households and often found their way into European collections as diplomatic gifts.
