Born in Dhuri, Punjab, in 1941, Manjit Bawa emerged as a prominent figure in the
art world, embarking on his creative journey with a national diploma in fine arts from the
School of Art, Delhi Polytechnic, in 1963. His artistic pursuits extended overseas, where he
earned a diploma in silk screen painting from England's Warden Institute of Essex in 1967.
During the late sixties, Bawa made notable contributions as a serigrapher in London and also
shared his expertise by teaching painting at the Institute of Adult Education in England.In
1998, Bawa co-founded Sama’a alongside Ina Puri, an organization dedicated to the
promotion of art and artists. His commitment to artistic exploration led him to participate in
various global art camps, leaving an indelible mark on the international art scene.
Posthumously, his exhibitions like 'Let’s Paint the Sky Red' (2011) and 'Time Unfolded' (2011)
continued to showcase the enduring brilliance of his work. Bawa's artistic accolades included
the 1st Bharat Bhawan Biennale in Bhopal (1986), the National Award from Lalit Kala
Akademi, New Delhi (1980), and the Sailoz Mukherjee Prize, New Delhi (1963). Manjit
Bawa's demise in December 2008 marked the conclusion of a remarkable artistic career,
leaving behind a profound legacy that continues to influence and inspire the world of Indian
art.
