Description:

Lot 1. THE THIRD PART OF THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOLAR AHMAD IBN AYAS AL-HANAFI
Dated 1281 AH / 1865 AD

Arabic manuscript on paper, written in a neat naskh script in black and red ink within double-ruled red borders. The text is arranged in long lines, with section headings and key phrases rubricated throughout. The leaves are uniformly laid out, the calligraphy exhibiting disciplined line spacing and clarity typical of nineteenth-century Ottoman manuscript production. The paper is of cream tone, with minor age toning, and retains its original sheen. The margins show faint handling marks consistent with careful study and use.

Bound in contemporary reddish-brown leather with central stamped medallion, cornerpieces, and a tooled border of repeating rosettes. The spine has been sympathetically restored in later plain leather, preserving the original covers. The endpapers include a yellow marbled panel with floral gilt tooling, typical of Ottoman bindings of the mid-nineteenth century.

The text forms the third part of a historical chronicle by the scholar Ahmad ibn Ayas al-Hanafi, compiled and copied by Muhammad, known as al-Barbari. Such chronicles preserve detailed accounts of rulers, events, and intellectual life of the period, providing an important continuation of Arabic historiographical tradition.
