Description:

A FAMILLE ROSE ‘JOURNEY TO THE WEST’ PLAQUE, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The plaque is centred by a circular famille rose porcelain panel, mounted within a square red-lacquered wooden frame with a dark outer border and pierced metal hanging fitting. The reverse is formed from vertical wooden boards, also red lacquered, with black painted floral decoration, giving the object the character of a framed hanging panel intended for display. The porcelain roundel is delicately painted in pale famille rose enamels with a scene from Journey to the West. Figures are shown within a mountainous landscape, including a mounted party with a dark simian figure suggestive of Sun Wukong, set opposite a small gathering of robed figures. The composition is restrained and atmospheric, using broad expanses of white ground to evoke mist and distance, with fine brushwork defining trees, rocks, figures and distant travellers. The red lacquer frame provides a strong visual contrast to the soft enamel palette of the porcelain plaque. Its square format encloses the circular panel in a manner associated with Chinese scholar’s studio and domestic decorative furnishings, where porcelain, lacquer and wood were often combined to create refined objects for interior display. The subject reflects the enduring popularity of Journey to the West, one of China’s great classical narratives, whose episodes and characters were widely represented across porcelain, painting, textile and decorative arts. The use of famille rose enamels, with their soft greens, pinks, yellows and iron-red details, lends the literary scene a gentle and narrative quality. Catalogued to the Qing Dynasty, the plaque is notable for its combination of literary subject, porcelain painting and lacquered framing. It is a decorative work that unites narrative imagery with the formal elegance of a framed circular porcelain panel. Diameter: 33.5cm Length x Width: 45 x 45cm
