Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Cotton and silk textile with block-printed floral motifs in madder red, green, and black on a rich yellow ground, bordered by a dark indigo field with repeating floral vines, enclosed by a metallic thread and magenta woven fringe. The reverse features a quilted plain silk panel in a deep purple tone, composed of subtly mismatched segments indicating a hand-pieced construction.

This charming and vibrant textile exemplifies the Kashmiri tradition of bold floral design, particularly the use of stylized pine-cone or flowerhead clusters repeated in orderly rows. The juxtaposition of yellow and indigo hues creates a visually striking composition, framed with a delicate metallic lace trim indicative of festive or ceremonial use.

Comparable examples:
A 19th-century Kashmiri textile with similar floral block printing and metallic edging was offered at Christie’s, South Kensington, 6 October 2015, Lot 212.

Another related printed cotton hanging with contrasting field and border designs sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 4 April 2017, Lot 77, for £2,750.

A comparable example featuring a vibrant palette and metallic-thread trim was presented at Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 24 October 2018, Lot 93.

Note:
Such textiles were often used as wall hangings, ceremonial cloths, or coverlets, and were appreciated for their colorful patterns and artisanal techniques. The reverse suggests reuse of silk remnants, a practice not uncommon in Kashmiri domestic and dowry textiles, further adding to its historical and cultural richness. The piece is in stable condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.
