Description:

A SET OF EIGHT (8) OTTOMAN SILVER CUPS, 19TH CENTURY
Ottoman Empire, 19th century

Description:
An exquisite set of eight finely worked Ottoman silver cups, each masterfully crafted in a tulip-shaped form. These delicate vessels are characterised by pierced and chased decoration with palmette and serrated foliate motifs, echoing classical Ottoman aesthetics. The handles are elegantly formed in the shape of floral stems, adding a refined sculptural dimension. Resting on lobed floral bases, the cups exhibit uniformity in craftsmanship and design, indicating they were likely produced as a matched service for an elite household.

These vessels would have likely served as part of a formal presentation set for serving sweetmeats or sorbet during courtly or ceremonial occasions. Their form and decoration reflect the influence of naturalistic floral designs favoured in 19th-century Ottoman decorative arts.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 7.5cm

  • Weight: 350g

Provenance:
Private European collection

  • A similar pair of Ottoman silver cups with pierced decoration sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 October 2016, Lot 202, for £4,750.

Note:
